BYU is the only school in the country ranked in the top 10 in both football and men’s basketball

On April 10, the BYUtv Sports Nation X account posted a poll asking which Cougar team between football and men’s basketball would be more likely to replicate last season’s success.

AJ Dybantsa, the star incoming freshman men’s basketball player, had not yet begun attending the school, but he quoted the post and asked, “Why not both?”

The men’s basketball team has not yet officially begun its season (it has played two exhibition games), but already both it and the BYU football team have accomplished a feat that portends great things.

On Sunday, the football team moved up to No. 10 in the AP poll. The men’s basketball team is ranked No. 8 in its respective preseason AP Top 25 poll. With them together, BYU is the only program in the country with both teams in the top 10 of their respective AP polls.

Six other schools — Alabama, Texas Tech, Tennessee, Louisville, Michigan and Houston — have both their football and men’s basketball teams ranked somewhere in the top 25 in both polls.

While neither team will play this week, the following week is massive for both sides. On Nov. 3, the men’s basketball team will officially open its season with a marquee matchup against Villanova. On Nov. 8, the football team will face Texas Tech on the road in a matchup that will likely pit two top 10 teams against each other.

The men’s basketball team will face Holy Cross that same day.
