TYR Summer Championships, Day One Prelims: Jamie Jack Fires Off 21.63 in 50 Freestyle; Caeleb Dressel Lurking

Much of the jockeying for invitations to next summer’s Pan Pacific Championships is over. The times posted by athletes at the United States Nationals, World Championships and World University Games will largely determine who will represent the United States in next summer’s international competition.

But there are still two chances for swimmers to earn a spot on the American Pan Pacs roster – this week’s TYR Summer Championships in Southern California and the upcoming World Junior Championships in Romania. The TYR Championships opened with preliminaries this morning at the William Woollett Aquatic Center, with finals scheduled for 5 p.m. (Pacific). The meet will run through Friday and will feature the likes of Caeleb Dressel, Hunter Armstrong, Alex Shackell and Bella Sims.

Here’s an event-by-event recap for the Day One prelims:

Women’s 200 Individual Medley

Behind a strong breaststroke leg, Justina Kozan landed the top seed for the final of the 200 individual medley. Kozan touched the wall in 2:13.58, an effort that was fueled by her breaststroke leg of 38.66. Kozan was followed in the No. 2 position by Australian Kayla Hardy, who went 2:14.60 in the morning. Grabbing the third seed and final time under 2:25 was Summer Cardwell (2:14.99).

Coming off a lengthy flight home from the World Championships in Singapore, Bella Sims was ninth-fastest in prelims, going 2:18.51. Sims contributed a prelims leg on the American 800 freestyle relay at the World Champs and earned a silver medal in the event after Team USA finished just behidn Australia in the final.
