Carolina’s 44-point win over NC Central wasn’t particularly memorable, but it did give us another chance to see one of college basketball’s fastest-rising stars put on a show.
After an off night (by his standards) against Radford on Tuesday, Caleb Wilson nearly put up a double-double in the first half on Friday, amassing 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks in 19 minutes. He played 10 minutes in the second half and finished the game with 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 blocks. In doing so, he became the first UNC freshman to record a double-double in consecutive games since Day’Ron Sharpe in the 2020-21 season.

It’s already clear that Wilson is this team’s engine, and he powered the offense through a few lulls in the opening half, throwing down several of the emphatic dunks that have become his signature. It’s rare to have a player who makes even the buy games worth watching, and we shouldn’t take it for granted – especially since it’s now all but certain that this will be his only season in Chapel Hill.
