Canelo Alvarez took the biggest defeat of his career Saturday.

Yet, despite losing his super middleweight WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF and Ring Magazine titles in a unanimous decision to Terence Crawford, Alvarez handled his setback well and with grace. Alvarez didn’t shy away from the media and attended the post-fight press conference, where he asked about his thoughts on his title bout with Crawford.

“It was a great night for boxing,” Alvarez said. “I feel very proud and happy with what we accomplished today. As a Mexican, I feel very proud of what I’ve achieved and how far I’ve gone to represent my country. I feel very proud. It was a great night for boxing.”

Alvarez had only lost twice before fighting Crawford. He had lost decisions to Floyd Mayweather in 2013, and to Dmitry Bivol in a weight class above in 2022. Many said Alvarez was too young and inexperienced when he fought Mayweather, and too small going up in weight to fight Bivol.

For this fight against Crawford, it was disputed in the division Alvarez has seen the most success in. Alvarez made no excuses for the loss and gave all the credit to his opponent.

“We knew that Crawford was a great fighter, and I did what I was supposed to do,” Alvarez said. “I tried every way. I trained really hard, and he deserves all the credit. I tried my best tonight and I just could not figure out the style.”

This is the first time in a decade that Alvarez has no status in boxing as champion, which could be a strange scene to many, but not for him.

“I feel a champion no matter what,” Alvarez said. “I win no matter what. I still feel a champion. It is what it is. You have to take the loss and accept everything, but I’m going to continue to do it.”
