Caroline Wozniacki didn't agree with John Isner's take that Valentin Vacherot's Shanghai Masters victory was more impressive than Emma Raducanu's 2021 US Open win.
In late September and early October, Vacherot was ranked at No. 204 and only made the Shanghai qualifying draw as an alternate. The rest is an absolute fairytale as the Monegasque went on to win two qualifying matches and seven more in the main draw to become a Masters champion. En route to winning the Chinese Masters event, the 27-year-old defeated in the main draw Laslo Djere, Alexander Bublik, Tomas Machac, Tallon Griekspoor, Holger Rune, Novak Djokovic and Arthur Rinderknech. By doing so, the 26-year-old became the lowest ranked Masters champion in tennis history.
In 2021, Raducanu became the first-ever male or female player to win a Grand Slam as a qualifier. That year, the Briton won 10 matches – all in straight sets – en route to lifting the US Open title.
“I think it is more impressive, yes. (For Raducanu) it’s a bigger story because it’s the US Open, but I think this is more improbable than what she did," Isner said on the Nothing Major Show after Vacherot's Shanghai triumph.
Wozniacki's response to Isner's Vacherot-Raducanu take: No…
During her guest appearance on the podcast, Wozniacki brought up Isner's take. The American responded by stating that he was "standing by" his statement. The Danish tennis player instantly made it clear how she felt about that by dropping a firm "No."
Isner argued that Vacherot had only one main-level at 26 years old prior to his Shanghai run.
“No matter how you slice and dice it. That’s better than winning a 1000… When you just talk about the result, the end result, i think winning the US Open is better than winning a 1000 Shanghai,” 2018 Australian Open champion Wozniacki stated.
