World Champs Profile: Carson Foster Chasing Latest International Hardware
Leading into the start of the World Championships this weekend, Swimming World will publish a handful of short profiles on top contenders for the podium in Singapore. Our next entry in this series features the United States’ Carson Foster, a former University of Texas standout who has become a lynchpin for Team USA.

The Road to Singapore
Every selection meet requires a bit of contemplation for Foster, whose versatility provides him with multiple schedule options. For the World Championships, Foster successfully qualified to represent the U.S. in the 200 butterfly, 200 individual medley and 400 medley. Each of those events will feature Foster as a medal contender.
The bronze medalist in the 400 IM at last summer’s Olympic Games in Paris, Foster heads to Singapore with the third-fastest time in the world this year, a 4:07.92 mark from the National Championships. Foster is ranked second in the world in the 200 IM, at 1:55.76, and he sits third in the global rankings in the 200 fly (1:53.70).
Top Career Achievement
The 23-year-old made his Olympic debut last summer, where he helped the United States to silver in the 800 freestyle relay and earned a bronze medal in the 400 individual medley. In the 400 IM, won by Frenchman Leon Marchand, Foster clocked a time of 4:08.66, finishing just .04 behind silver medalist Tomoyuki Matsushita of Japan.

This summer will mark Foster’s fourth consecutive appearance at the World Championships, as he’s previously raced in 2022, 2023 and 2024. During that time, Foster has totaled eight medals, including four silver medals in individual medley events. He was a member of the United States’ victorious 800 freestyle relay at the 2022 World Champs.
Stat Fact
The 4:06.56 that he produced in the 400 IM at the 2023 World Championships ranks Foster as the No. 8 performer in the history of the event. He is the No. 14 performer of all-time in the 200 IM (1:55.65) and 15th in the 200 fly (1:53.70).
