LAFAYETTE — Wrestling meets and top tier basketball performances cap the week of action for the Lafayette area.

Journal & Courier Athlete of the Week candidates presented by Ivy Tech.

These nominees’ performances occurred between the period of Dec. 8-13.

Journal & Courier Athlete of the Week presented by Ivy Tech

Ivy Tech Male Athlete of the Week nominees

  • Sol Siburcrist, North White, wrestling – The returning IHSAA semi-state qualifier at 132 pounds went 4-0 during matches at the Caston Super Six Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 13.

  • Brody Baker, Harrison, basketball – The junior guard scored 26 points in a dominant 77-27 win over Danville on the road on Friday, Dec. 12.

  • Brayden Thiele-Hahn, Rossville, basketball – Thiele-Hahn scored 26 points including 23 points in the first quarter and finished with 26 points for the game and six rebounds to lead Rossville over Frontier 58-55 on Friday, Dec. 12.

  • Tate Leman, West Central, basketball – Leman scored 23 points to lead West Central over South Newton 74-42 on Friday, Nov. 12.

  • Ben Werth, West Lafayette, basketball – Werth surpassed 1,000 career points in the Red Devils’ 78-61 victory over Crawfordsville on Friday, Dec. 12

  • Chase Winkler, Frontier, basketball – Winkler scored 18 points and as the primary defender on Thiele-Hahn, held the Rossville leading scorer to one point in the second half of a hotly contested matchup of two potential IHSAA class 1A sectional opponents.

Ivy Tech Female Athlete of the Week nominees

  • Lillie Graves, McCutcheon, basketball – Graves scored 23 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and went 5-for-8 from 3-point range in a 70-34 win over Central Catholic on Tuesday, Dec. 9. McCutcheon has won 10 straight games since its season opening loss to Plainfield on Nov. 5.

  • Maya Layton, Lafayette Jeff, basketball – Layton scored 22 points for Lafayette Jeff to beat Harrison on the road 47-41 on Tuesday, Dec. 9.

  • Ava Burkle, Rossville, basketball – Burkle scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on Thursday, Dec. 11 to lead Rossville over Sheridan 47-24.

  • Aaliyah McLean, McCutcheon, wrestling – McLean earned her 100th career win with a second round pinfall victory against Morgan O’Brien of Harrison on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

  • Karina Clase, West Lafayette, basketball – The freshman Clase scored 21 points, went 8-of-8 from the field including 5-of-5 from 3-point range in an 58-53 loss to Benton Central on Saturday, Dec. 13.

  • Ella Barry, Southmont, basketball – Barry scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Southmont in a 55-47 win over Central Catholic. Southmont has won 11 straight games to start a season for the first time since coach Dan Burkman took the program over in 2020.

  • Isabel Kaplan, West Lafayette, wrestling – Kaplan won her match at 113 pounds in a duel meet against Twin Lakes on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
