Chase Elliott crash big hit to NASCAR championship hopes

by

Chase Elliott’s NASCAR Playoff run took a massive hit in the NASCAR Talladega race on Oct. 19.

Elliott was part of the wreck carnage from a crash at the front of the pack. It took out race leader AJ Allmendinger.

The wreck occurred with nine laps left in Stage 1 when Erik Jones attempted to push Noah Gragson to the front. However, the push seemed off center and Gragson lost control of his car, bumping into Allmendinger. That set Allmendinger into the wall, ending his day.

Elliott’s car also was involved farther back as drivers began to wreck around him. Elliott tried to let up prior to his involvement.

Other drivers involved in the crash included Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Austin Cindric, Austin Dillon and Justin Haley.

Chase Elliott NASCAR playoff standings

Elliott entered the race sixth in the Round of 8 standings.

He is not out of the playoffs with this wreck. However, he will likely have to win the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville on Oct. 26 to reach the Championship 4 in Phoenix on Nov. 2.
