The Week 5 bye paused the three-game losing streak Florida currently finds itself on, but the Gators are still sinking down most college football rankings. The Athletic’s weekly 136-team rerank is no exception, as the Orange and Blue fell one spot to No. 55 this week.
The Gators entered 2025 ranked No. 15 in the country, but a loss to South Florida in Week 2 led to a big drop. DJ Lagway’s five-interception performance in Week 3 against LSU brought Florida down to No. 50 overall, but the Miami loss wasn’t too punishing.

Still, the Gators remain ranked between programs such as James Madison and Texas State. Without disrespecting those other schools too much, an SEC team is supposed to be leagues better than that. Sure, No. 52 Clemson is in a similar position with a 1-3 record, but even Dan Mullen’s UNLV squad — which is 4-0, for the record — is ranked higher than Florida.
SEC teams make up half of top 10
Even though the top three teams in the country — Ohio State, Oregon and Miami — aren’t from the SEC, the conference is well represented. The Oklahoma Sooners, Ole Miss Rebels and Texas A&M Aggies control the next three spots on The Athletic’s list, with Alabama and Georgia rounding out the top 10.
Florida’s upcoming opponent, the Texas Longhorns, are just outside that range, followed by Missouri, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and LSU at Nos. 15-18. Mississippi State checks in at No. 27, Auburn is down 10 spots to No. 32 this week and South Carolina is up one to No. 34.

The only two SEC programs ranked below Florida by The Athletic are the No. 64 Kentucky Wildcats and No. 65 Arkansas Razorbacks.
