Chicago Sky just made their stance on Angel Reese crystal clear

by

This season clearly hasn’t gone Angel Reese’s way. She was recently suspended for one game after picking up her eighth technical foul of the season and now will also serve a half-game suspension from the Chicago Sky. This after recent comments made about the team following a loss that raised eyebrows.

Reese recently criticized the Sky and even hinted about her leaving Chicago if the team wasn’t able to improve around her. She later apologized and walked back those comments, but the damage was done.

As a result, the Sky opted to take the unusual step of announcing they would be suspending Reese for the first half of their Sunday game against the Las Vegas Aces. Not that it matters anyway, with the Sky’s playoff hopes already having been dashed.

Angel Reese was out of line about the Chicago Sky, but not wrong

The Sky are 20 games under .500 at the moment and lottery bound. That led to Reese’s criticism, calling out the front office to build a better team, and she even offered to recruit players.

They could use all the help they can get. Over the last two seasons, they have won only 40% of their games. With a few games left to play on their schedule, they have no incentive to try and win.

Still, her comments were an unnecessary distraction caused by the WNBA’s most outspoken player. While Reese does tend to get unfairly criticized, it’s hard to argue that her comments weren’t an unforced error. It brought unwanted attention to both her and the team.

Reese’s comments brought unwanted attention to her and the Sky

Reese continues to be a lightning rod online. While the saying is that there is no such thing as bad publicity, in her case, she could say the sky is blue and ignite intense backlash.

She certainly has brought more attention to the WNBA, though not as much as Caitlin Clark or Paige Bueckers. Still, she is one of the WNBA’s most recognizable players, even if some don’t think she’s good enough to warrant the attention she gets.

She has been more efficient this season, but that has yet to quiet critics, and her last comments and suspensions have only given them more ammunition.

All in all, Reese being suspended for the first half of an upcoming game is punishment for recent comments that she made about her team and her future with the Sky. It was a mistake that she will hopefully learn from, though her point stands that the Sky obviously needs to get better, being one of the worst teams in the WNBA this season.
