Chris Evert bluntly stated that she doesn't see any similarities between her love story with Jimmy Connors and the Emma Raducanu – Carlos Alcaraz dating rumors simply because the Briton and the Spaniard publicly underlined that they were not a couple and therefore should be left alone from such speculations.
In the early 1970s – when Evert and Connors were just teenagers – the rumors started to swirl around that they were a thing. After both won the 1974 Wimbledon title – confirmed their relationships and got engaged – it became quite a story and they labeled tennis' "golden couple." Sadly for fans, their wedding never happened after they called off their engagement.
Even before Raducanu and Alcaraz signed up for the US Open mixed doubles, fans loved to talk about whether there was some personal liking between the two. Over the past two months, they have been asked multiple times if they were dating and every time the answer would be the same – no.
Ahead of the US Open, ESPN published a piece centered on the fans' obsession with the Raducanu and Alcaraz dating rumors. And they contacted Evert for a comment and asked whether she saw any parallels between her story with Connors and the one between the 22-year-old Briton and the 22-year-old Spaniard.
Evert: No, because Raducanu and Alcaraz are not in a relationship
"No, because they're not having a relationship. I'm so glad I came up in the '70s, not in this day and age. Because, I mean, jeez, you're controversial and talked about no matter what you do," the 70-year-old American tennis icon told ESPN.
During this year's Wimbledon, Raducanu had a bit fun moment with the media when shutting down the Alcaraz dating rumors.
“We're just good friends," the 22-year-old said before stating that it was "a way to wrap up" the presser.
