The Tigers are adding depth to their starting rotation from within the AL Central.
Detroit has agreed to acquire right-handers Chris Paddack and Randy Dobnak from the Twins ahead of Thursday’s Trade Deadline, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Monday. The clubs have not confirmed the deal.
Minnesota will receive Minor League catcher Enrique Jimenez, the Tigers’ No. 14 prospect per MLB Pipeline, per source.
Paddack, a pending free agent, has posted a 4.95 ERA over 111 innings for Minnesota. The seven-year veteran has recorded 83 strikeouts, and his 17.6% strikeout rate is a career low. The 29-year-old will give the division-leading Tigers another starting option behind Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize and Reese Olson.
TRADE DETAILS
Tigers receive: RHP Chris Paddack, RHP Randy Dobnak
Twins receive: C Enrique Jimenez, Tigers’ No. 14 prospect
Dobnak, 30, has spent most of the year with Triple-A St. Paul, where he has a 7.12 ERA in 17 games (10 starts), with 42 strikeouts and 35 walks. He made one MLB appearance this year, allowing one run in 5 1/3 innings of relief in a 9-2 loss on March 30, and he owns a 4.86 career ERA in the 140 2/3 Major League innings.
More trades could follow for the Twins, who are in fourth place in the AL Central at 50-55. Starting pitcher Joe Ryan and relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax have been mentioned in trade rumors, although all of them are controllable beyond 2025 and thus likely come with a higher asking price.
Like Paddack, Twins outfielder Harrison Bader, left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe and utilityman Willi Castro can reach free agency after this season.
