Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney expressed optimism that quarterback Cade Klubnik will be ready to go when the Tigers host SMU at Memorial Stadium this weekend.

Klubnik exited last Saturday’s 41-10 win over Boston College in the third quarter with what Swinney described as a sprained ankle. Before leaving, the senior completed 22 of 30 passes for 280 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, while adding 48 rushing yards and a score on the ground.

Following Wednesday’s practice, Swinney gave an encouraging update on his quarterback’s recovery. “Been limited, just been taking our time with him,” Swinney said. “Like I said (Tuesday), he has gone from day to day to hour to hour. Hopefully by tomorrow it will be minute to minute. Literally, getting better every hour.”

Through the season so far, Klubnik has completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,530 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He’s also contributed 160 rushing yards and two more scores. With him leading the offense, Clemson is averaging 278.8 passing yards per game, ranking 25th nationally.

“Just being smart with him,” Swinney added. “He’s been able to do what he needed to do.”

Clemson and SMU are set to kick off at 3:30 p.m. in Death Valley, in a matchup that will air on the ACC Network. It will be SMU’s first-ever visit to Clemson.
