Clemson QB Cade Klubnik loves what he’s seen from Chris Denson

Clemson has taken a long-term approach with freshman quarterback Chris Denson from the moment he arrived on campus, and that patience already appears to be paying off.

A late flip during the 2025 recruiting cycle, Denson chose Clemson after backing off his commitment to Coastal Carolina, despite additional interest from Pitt and Minnesota and late attention from Florida State and Notre Dame. From the start, there was an understanding that immediate playing time was unlikely. Cade Klubnik was firmly in place as the starter, with Chris Vizzina and Trent Pearman ahead of Denson on the depth chart, making a redshirt season the logical path.

Instead of coasting, Denson embraced the year as a developmental opportunity. His progress has stood out to those around him, particularly Klubnik, who has watched the freshman grow since January.

“I have not seen somebody develop in one year like he has since I’ve been here,” Klubnik said. “It’s been really incredible just to see from where he was in January to where he is in December.”

Denson’s athletic ability has never been in question, especially as a runner. He showed that in limited action this season, first with a short carry against SMU and later with a breakout performance against Furman. In the win over the Paladins, Denson rushed six times for 106 yards and a touchdown and completed all four of his passes for 22 yards and another score, producing one of the most efficient rushing outings by a quarterback in Clemson history.

While the flashes with his legs were expected, Klubnik says the biggest jump has come as a passer.

“From January to now, just his release and his mechanics, it’s gotten really good,” Klubnik said. “He’s just attacked every day.”

As the veteran in the room, Klubnik has taken an active role in helping Denson along, drawing from his own experience leaning on older quarterbacks early in his career.

“I’ve got four years of experience that I’m able to pour into him,” Klubnik said. “He’s going to be a great player, and he’s going to be a great leader. I’m really, really excited for him.”

For Clemson, Denson’s redshirt year has already accomplished exactly what the staff hoped it would.
