CM Punk has now revealed how Triple H threw away a script Punk was reading following his return in 2023.
While speaking on SportBible, CM Punk talked about coming back to WWE at Survivor Series and said there was a bit of friction with Randy Orton. Randy had just come back after being gone for a long time and having major surgery, and Punk’s return at Survivor Series ended up taking the attention away from Randy’s big moment.
The next week, Randy had a match with Dominik Mysterio. Their match ran longer than planned, which meant Punk didn’t get enough time for his promo. But he didn’t take it too seriously, he joked around about it and figured he could always say what he needed next week since there are live shows every week.
“I remember when I first came back—talk about people going over their time. I think with Randy, there was a little friction there. I came back and shit all over Randy’s moment at Survivor Series. Randy was gone, he came back, had a new spine, and here’s CM Punk stepping all over it.
Then the following week, he had a match with Dom and they went over on their time, and it drastically cut into my promo time. We’re all hooting, I’m laughing about it. Whatever I didn’t get to say this week, I’ll just say next week. That’s the beauty of doing 52 live shows a year.”
Punk also revealed a funny story from backstage with Triple H. He was walking around holding a piece of paper with his promo written on it, and he kept looking at it. Triple H saw him and asked what he was doing, saying that Punk was freaking people out. Triple H said no one was used to seeing him carry a script.
Punk told Triple H he didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes since he was still getting used to being back. Triple H took the paper, crumpled it, and threw it away. He told Punk to just be himself and talk to the fans like he always does. That moment gave Punk the confidence boost he needed and reminded him why he was there in the first place.
“I remember I was running around with a piece of paper in my hand that had whatever I was supposed to say, and I kept looking at it. Then Triple H comes up to me and he’s like, ‘What are you doing, man? You’re freaking everybody out.’
I’m like, ‘What do you mean I’m freaking everybody out?’ He’s like, ‘Nobody here has ever seen you hold a script in your hand and read it like you’re not just gonna go out there and say whatever the hell you want.’
I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m kind of new around here, so I don’t wanna step on anyone’s toes.’
He grabbed the piece of paper, crumpled it up, and threw it out. He said, ‘You’re CM Punk. Go out there and talk to the people.’
I was like, ‘Right, right—that’s what I needed to hear,’ since I was trying to move in a certain way. And he was like, ‘No, you don’t gotta do that. Just be you. That’s why you’re here.’”
This comes after CM Punk made it clear he and Triple H are on the same page and they have a great relationship now. Therefore, it’s clear Triple H ultimately wanted what’s best for Punk and that’s all that matters in the end.
