Colorado coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders struck an appreciative tone while turning the page toward this week’s road test against Houston. With the Buffaloes sitting at 1-1, Sanders used his press conference to salute Cougars head coach Willie Fritz while also breaking down the challenge ahead.

“Coach Fritz’s remarkable career, unbelievable career, what he accomplished at Tulane and so forth has been astonishing,” Sanders said. “Very impressed by what he’s accomplished as a coach, as well as being national coach of the year in 2022. And man, 12-2, they were flat out rolling. Twenty-three and four in the last two years. God bless you, coach. Love what you’re doing. Love what you’re doing for all coaches.”
Fritz’s Cougars have opened the season 2-0, and Sanders sees a balanced squad on both sides of the ball. “Good team. We’re playing 2-0, doing some remarkable things offensively, moving the ball. A running back that can flat out hit it. When he hits it, he’s out of there. Some receivers that can get the job done. Defensively, they got some guys that can cover.”
Sanders believes his team must continue striving for balance offensively while relying on a special teams unit that has consistently delivered. “Hopefully we’re able to run the ball and have a balanced attack,” he said. “Special teams have been special for us, so we don’t fret that with anyone.”
Beyond the X’s and O’s, Sanders emphasized the importance of playing in Texas, both for recruiting and for the atmosphere. “It’s a tremendous recruiting ground for us. Texas, period. So we love to go down there and play, and I pray that it’s a sellout. We like to play in front of sellouts.”
The Friday night kickoff in Houston is set to provide Sanders another stage to test his reshuffled roster and build on the spark provided last week. “We welcome the challenge,” he said. “I can’t wait to finish up here, get on the flight, and get to Houston and get some work done.”
