Coco Gauff is thrilled for Venus Williams as the 21-year-old says she is "looking forward to seeing the legend" competing at the Australian Open.
This week, the organizers of the opening Grand Slam of the year announced the 45-year-old as a main draw wildcard recipient for this year's event.
For Williams, it will be her first appearance at Melbourne Park since 2021. When the former world No. 1 takes to the court in Melbourne, she will officially become the oldest singles main draw participant in Australian Open history.
The American, who made her Australian Open debut in 1998, is a two-time finalist in Melbourne – she was beaten by her sister Serena in the 2003 and 2017 finals.
Gauff asked about Williams receiving a main draw wildcard for the Australian Open
Gauff, who grew up idolizing the Williams sisters, was asked about the news during a press conference at the United Cup.
"She's a legend of the sport, so it will be cool to see her back in action. It's incredible for the longevity of her career that she has. Yeah, she's a legend, one of the people I looked up to, so looking forward to seeing her back on court," the world No. 3 said about the seven-time Grand Slam champion being granted a main draw wildcard for the Happy Slam.
Meanwhile, the five-time Wimbledon champion is set to play three tournaments in January. Next week, the seven-time Grand Slam champion will launch her 2026 season at the ASB Classic in Auckland. The Auckland main draw was released on Saturday and the 45-year-old drew Magda Linette in the first round.
Before heading to the Australian Open, Williams will also make a stop in Hobart after the WTA 250 tournament handed her a main draw wildcard earlier this week.
