Cody Chovancek earned a highlight finish of Raphael Uchegbu in the opening bout at Dana White’s Contender Series 82, but it will be marred with some controversy.
Chovancek (9-0) dominated Uchegbu (10-2) in the second round then put him down and out early in the third of the bantamweight contest Tuesday at UFC Apex in Las Vegas, but it was a controversial elbow following a fence grab in Round 1 that will be signified as a turning point.
Nevertheless, Chovancek got the TKO finish at the 0:10 mark of Round 3, and put himself in strong position to get a contract from UFC CEO Dana White, who could be seen mouthing, “That’s how you do it” after the finish.
“I caught his timing toward the end and I landed the shot,” Chovancek told Laura Sanko in his post-fight interview. “We were up two and could have road it out, but I wanted to put him away. I know what this show is all about.
