Colombia played host to and defeated Peru on Saturday. Los Tucanes were 38-24 winners over Los Tumis at the Estadio Cincuentenario in Medellín. The half-time scoreline favored Peru with the Colombians forced to come back from a 14-10 deficit. They did so with a convincing second-half performance, notably so in the third quarter.
Peru and Colombia both scored two tries in the opening half. Peruvian tries to prop Ricardo Cárdenas and second-rower Sebastian Velarde were both converted. In contrast, Colombia’s two first half tries were unconverted. This was the difference between the teams at half-time.
Peru’s two second-half tries were both scored by replacement Mauricio Monier Bautista and both came in the final minutes of the match. Before then, Santiago Galvez, Daniel Gómez, Alejandro Llanos, and Esteban Suárez had all scored tries for Los Tucanes.
The match paid tribute to Lucas Caro Gómez, one of the key figures in the development of rugby in Colombia. The home side proudly assembled a team with players from nationwide. Clubs from Antioquia, Valle, Atlántico, Cesar, Bolívar, Norte de Santander and Meta were all represented.
