Colorado adds uber productive FCS pass rusher to transfer portal haul

by

Colorado football continued to add to its defensive front Monday as North Dakota State transfer DE Toby Anene announced his commitment to the Buffs.

Anene was one of the FCS’s most productive players, recording 27 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, six pass deflections and a forced fumble. He becomes the tenth transfer portal addition by Deion Sanders’ staff and is arguably the most productive one the Buffaloes have added.

At NDSU, Anene played 40 games, including double-digit starts, making him an ideal candidate to step in and start for CU right away. He joins Yamil Talib, Balansama Kamara and Lamont Lester Jr. as the four pass rushers to join the Buffs four days into the portal window. Anene is ranked as a three-star portal recruit and the No. 21 EDGE player.

Colorado finished second-to-last in the Big 12 with just 13 sacks last season, with the Buffaloes’ front seven rarely getting home to the quarterback. The lack of a pass rush was a big reason why the CU defense struggled. Furthermore, the Buffs’ run defense ranked No. 133 out of 134 teams in yards allowed, giving up a whopping 222.5 per game. Needless to say, the defensive line additions Colorado made so far must also help out in the running game, not only as situational pass rushers.
