Colorado basketball defeats California Baptist, makes program history

by

On Monday night at the CU Events Center, two undefeated teams battled it out in what looked like an NCAA tournament game.

The Buffaloes fended off a 7-0 Cal Baptist to win 78-70 and move to 8-0 in the young season. It became the first time in 76 years (since 1949-50) to start the season with eight straight wins.

Star freshman quarterback Isaiah Johnson led the way with 17 points and hit nine of his 11 free throw attempts. He was one of four Buffs to hit double figures with Sebastian Rancik, Barrington Hargrees and Alon Michaeli joining Johnson. Bangot Dak anchored the Colorado defense, hauling in eight rebounds and two blocks.

It was not the most potent offensive night for a Colorado team that averages over 90 points per game, as it scored just 78. The Lancers built an impressive 14-point first-half lead, but the Buffs cut it within two going into halftime. Colorado had a 16-0 run in the second half that propelled them to an eighth win.

Tad Boyle’s squad will now hit the road for its first true road game of the season, facing in-state rival Colorado State on Saturday, which should be a solid litmus test for the undefeated Buffs.
