Colorado lands former No. 1 running back recruit from top SEC program

by

Colorado added four Power Four transfers Saturday, its biggest day of talent acquisition since the portal opened on January 2. Perhaps the most intriguing piece the Buffaloes landed is Alabama transfer running back Richard Young.

Young was a four-star class of 2023 recruit and the No. 4 running back in the country. The Florida native chose the Crimson Tide over a host of other top programs. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound back will now head to Boulder with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Young has a unique blend of power, speed and finesse that made him one of the top recruits just a few years ago. His recruiting pedigree has not quite matched his on-field success, having just 59 carries for 234 yards and five touchdowns in three seasons with Alabama.

In 2025, Young rushed 23 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns. The best game of his career so far came against LSU in 2024, where he carried the ball six times for 27 yards and one touchdown. Young also had a 62-yard carry against a ranked Missouri team that season.

Young becomes the Buffaloes’ third running back, added from the portal, joining Sacramento State’s Jaquail Smith and Damian Henderson II. Those three will join returning starter Micah Welch and redshirt senior DeKalon Taylor as the five running backs that new offensive coordinator Brennan Marion will have at his disposal.

Marion will try to get the best out of Young, who clearly has the traits to be an elite running back but has not put the complete package together.
