Jannik Sinner's US Open preparation is back on track after illness briefly disrupted his rhythm. World no. 1 fought for the Cincinnati Masters crown on Monday against Carlos Alcaraz and retired while trailing 5-0 after only 23 minutes.
The Italian had been dealing with a virus and fever for two days. It left him drained, especially at 3 p.m. when the match started due to heat and humidity. Jannik tried to perform for the crowd but could not finish the duel.
The setback raised concern ahead of the US Open, especially after his withdrawal from the mixed doubles. However, the coach Darren Cahill provided positive news for Jannik's fans, saying that his pupil feels better.

Sinner did not train at the US Open on Tuesday and Wednesday, allowing his body to recover and regain energy. The defending champion will hit the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday alongside Francisco Comesana, getting a chance to feel the court and balls.
After a setback, Jannik will resume his practice routine, with more than enough time to shape up his game ahead of the first-round clash and rebuild strength and sharpness.
The Italian's steady recovery offers reassurance, although his most recent setback reminds us of how fragile preparations can be in a demanding season. However, Sinner has stabilized his health and turned his focus to the title defense.

The 24-year-old played well in Cincinnati and reached a blockbuster title clash against Carlos Alcaraz. However, he experienced a setback a day before and performed miles below his best before deciding to retire under a boiling sun.
"Jannik suffered from a virus that forced him to retire against Carlos on Monday. He is feeling a bit better now and will rest today. Jannik is expected to return to the court on Thursday, and we are confident he will be fine," Darren Cahill said.
