Being the captain of a Davis Cup team brings challenges and difficulties that you have to face. This is also the reason why most nations choose the most experienced one who can help them with his experience and quality.
David Ferrer got this chance back in December 2022, given that he excelled as a player in this tournament. However, this adventure brought plenty of difficulties for the experienced former tennis player, as Spain just qualified for this year's Davis Cup Finals.
Throughout his long career, Ferrer had the chance to face the greats of this sport, but certainly the matches with his compatriot Rafael Nadal brought special excitement and great moments.
Nadal decided to retire from the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, playing his last match of his career.
Speaking to Punto de Break, Ferrer explained his decisions, while also sharing his most difficult moment as the captain.
Many consider Spain's match against Denmark to be the most difficult moment of his career, but Ferrer has denied it.
Although he admits that he has had difficult matches that left a deep mark, he still emphasizes that the defeat to Rafael in the farewell match was the most difficult moment for him.
“No, I wouldn’t say they’re the toughest, because at the end of the day, we’re in the Finals,” said Ferrer.
"Look, I remember in my debut as national team coach, we lost (laughs) two ties, six-nil, every single match. It was tough, especially at home. And I remember Marbella, which did end well, but it was tough, the beginning was quite difficult.
However, I would say Malaga, when we lost against the Netherlands in Rafa’s farewell match, because it’s Rafa and I have a very special affection for him: for me, perhaps, that was the toughest.”
Rafael Nadal is by many the greatest
These words speak volumes about how much Rafael Nadal is respected, and not only there, but around the world. The Spaniards have had many quality players throughout history, but Rafael Nadal is for many the greatest not only in Spain, but in the history of this sport.
