David Otunga isn’t holding back. In a new interview with Ariel Helwani, the former WWE Superstar and Harvard-educated lawyer made a bold claim — that WWE has stolen his creative ideas before and legally gotten away with it.
While discussing the idea of returning to wrestling, Otunga revealed that he’s sitting on a pitch he believes could completely shake up the industry — but he’s not sharing it publicly, and for good reason.
“I actually have a really, really dope pitch that would be awesome. But I can’t share it because somebody will steal my idea. WWE’s stolen so many of my ideas, you know, over the years and they’re legally allowed to contractually because they would own my IP, anything I come up with.”
Otunga went on to describe his dream return — not just for a match, but as a character with real staying power. He compared it to someone like Paul Heyman, but with a twist.
“Well, you know, actually I would probably say like my dream would be not even just one more match, but like a character. Like I would love to come back as kind of like a manager. Imagine Paul Heyman, yes, but who can get in there and kick some ass when he needs to.”
He didn’t reveal any specifics about the pitch but did tease it was faction-based and unlike anything seen in wrestling before.
“I have an awesome idea that would work at any wrestling promotion. A really, really good storyline and for a faction and I’ve never seen it in wrestling before.”
Otunga says he’s keeping it locked down tight and hinted that it’s the kind of idea he’d only bring out with the right deal — and some serious protection.
“No, no, no, that’s covered with—I gotta be signed an NDA. I got something that would be great.”
While Otunga is still open to a return, he clearly hasn’t forgotten how the company handled his creative contributions in the past. It also throws a spotlight on how WWE handles intellectual property — a topic Otunga is uniquely qualified to speak on.
Do you think David Otunga should bring his idea to AEW, or keep it in the vault until WWE plays fair? Drop your take in the comments and tell us who you’d cast in his dream faction.
