Defensive back Shelton Lewis is no longer on the Clemson football roster, per report

by

According to multiple reports, Clemson defensive back Shelton Lewis is no longer with the program. The junior cornerback has informed the staff he intends to redshirt this season and is expected to enter the transfer portal when it opens. With the move, he will preserve two years of eligibility at his next stop.

Lewis had worked as the backup “Tiger” defensive back to Misun Kelley on the most recent depth chart. He saw action in three of Clemson’s first four games, logging 49 snaps with seven tackles and a pass breakup. For his career, he has appeared in 27 contests with six starts, recording 29 tackles, 10 pass breakups, and two interceptions, one of which he returned 46 yards for a touchdown.

The Georgia native arrived at Clemson in January of 2023 after flipping his commitment from Pitt. A former three-star recruit out of Stockbridge High School, Lewis excelled as both a defensive back and a receiver, while also winning a state gold medal in the 400-meter dash as a junior.

He was named Region 8-4A Athlete of the Year by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution after helping his team to a 10-3 season and a region championship.

Off the field, Lewis is a sports communication major and even completed a microinternship with Google during the spring of 2024. His departure continues a trend of roster changes for Clemson early in the season, as Dabo Swinney and his staff prepare the Tigers (1-3, 0-2 ACC) for Saturday’s noon road matchup at North Carolina on ESPN.
