Deian Gwynne: Gloucester back row banned for making eye contact

by

Gloucester back row Deian Gwynne has been banned for three weeks for making eye contact with Castres’ Florent Vanverberghe.

Gwynne was shown a yellow card for the incident in the 48th minute of Gloucester’s Champions Cup win against the French side on Saturday and was cited after the match.

The 19-year-old was found to have “recklessly made contact with the eye of an opponent” by the independent disciplinary commission.

However the incident was found to be at the “low end” of World Rugby’s sanctions for foul play and a ban of six weeks – reduced by 50% for Gwynne’s clear record, acceptance of the charge and inexperience – was given.
