Deion Sanders suggests a hilarious reason for Colorado fans’ derogatory chants toward BYU originally appeared on The Sporting News

When Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes dropped a Saturday game to a ranked BYU side, that alone wasn’t enough to be major news. The Cougars were nearly touchdown favorites, had entered Folsom Field with an unblemished record, and on paper, had a clear edge over a Colorado program still scrambling to find stable ground in the wake of Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders’ departures.

So again, the Buffs’ 24-21 loss on Saturday wasn’t a big deal.

But when chants of “F*** the Mormons” were projected from CU’s student section (directed towards the predominant faith of BYU fans), the nation took notice.

This isn’t the first time the chant has been utilized by opponents of BYU athletics. Last season’s basketball team notably received similar jeers courtesy of Arizona and Providence, not to mention plenty of other examples during football games. But this time, the Big 12 Conference decided it was time to put their foot down, smacking CU with a public reprimand and $50,000 fine.

Deion Sanders took to the media to make a formal apology on behalf of the football program.

“We would like to apologize to our opponents from a week ago for whatever derogatory statements were made by our fans.”

He’d continue to emphasize that the minority of the fanbase who participated in the cheer were not indicative of the Colorado faithful as a whole, and should not be projected to the community in Boulder. Then Sanders threw in a possible reason why they’d say such things, and it was hilarious.

“…a group of young kids who were probably intoxicated and high simultaneously. Maybe I shouldn’t have said that as well, but it’s the truth that will make you free.”

Colorado continues its season this weekend against TCU.
