Deion Sanders won’t reveal QB plan for Week 3 game vs. Houston after playing 3 quarterbacks in win over Delaware

Deion Sanders will be playing coy about Colorado’s quarterback rotation heading into the Buffaloes’ Week 3 game at Houston.

Colorado played three quarterbacks in its win over Delaware on Saturday. Week 1 starter Kaidon Salter got the start in the 31-7 win as both five-star freshman Julian Lewis and fourth-year QB Ryan Staub got playing time.

Staub threw two touchdown passes in the 31-7 win. He was 7-of-10 passing for 157 yards. Salter was 13-of-16 for 102 yards and Lewis was 2-of-4 passing for eight yards in his college debut.

“Yeah, I know exactly how I’m going to handle the situation,” Sanders said. “I’m not going to say it. But yeah, I’m not lost for direction.”

Sanders said that he had deliberated and prayed on how he’d handle the quarterback snaps against Delaware after the Buffaloes’ season-opening loss to Georgia Tech.

“The plan was each quarterback was going to get two series apiece and that’s what they did and somebody was going to come out of the pack … I think Staub got four, he was consistent and I wanted to give the other guys another opportunity,” Sanders said.

Salter played the first two series of the game and was replaced by Lewis. After Colorado punted on Lewis’ two drives, Staub entered the game as Colorado went on a six-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a 21-yard TD pass to Dekalon Taylor with nine seconds to go before halftime.

Staub then started the third quarter and hit Sincere Brown for a 71-yard TD on the third play of the half. He stayed in for two more series before Salter had two more series and Lewis closed the game out.

The QB rotation came after Salter was the team’s only QB in the loss to Georgia Tech. Sanders had said in the days before the game that he hoped to get Lewis some time if the situation allowed it, but Colorado only scored once off three Georgia Tech turnovers to start the game as the Yellow Jackets won 27-20.
