But after Barrett was tagged for what he said was his first T in Tennessee since 2018, the Devilettes rallied to take a 39-37 lead in the final seconds of the period on an inside basket by Tramaria Neal, who led Lebanon with 15 points.
“I heard Coach (Joseph) Hiett over there talking about ‘we got to focus a little bit more’, and we did that,” Barrett said. “Our kids are giving everything they’ve got. We’ve been riddled with injuries early on. We’ve had some adversity happen. You’re going to have a lot adversity happen throughout a season. But our kids, that goes from everybody that was on the bench to everybody on the floor, they gutted it out. They were pulling for each other.”
The Devilettes extended their run to 12-0 early in the fourth for a 42-37 lead. It reached a high of 47-39 before Lipscomb rallied to within 50-49. A three-point play by Neal with 1:12 to play extended the lead to 56-49. The Lady Mustangs scored in the final seconds but with no timeouts left, Lebanon didn’t even have to inbound the ball as LHS improved to 4-0.
“It wasn’t pretty at times,” Barrett said. “But it’s not supposed to be pretty in November. I couldn’t be prouder of them right now than I have in a long time because they gutted that thing out.”
