Young South African batting sensation Dewald Brevis has quickly turned heads with his fearless batting and dazzling stroke play. Dewald Brevis has become the player fans believe could carry forward the legacy left behind by the Proteas legend AB de Villiers.
Brevis, who is also known as “Baby AB” for batting like AB de Villiers, has been no less dramatic. After going unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction despite spending three seasons with the Mumbai Indians, Brevis bounced back in style in the yellow jersey.
MS Dhoni’s humility leaves Dewald Brevis in awe
The talented batter was picked mid-season by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025, and he instantly turned heads with his explosive performances. Brevis’ stint with CSK was not just about runs, but it was also about experiences. He shared the dressing room with MS Dhoni, and it left a deep mark on the youngster.

The Proteas star was not just impressed with Dhoni’s cricketing brain but also his humility off the field. Brevis recalled how Dhoni kept his room open for all of his CSK teammates, allowing everyone to drop in, chat, or just spend time together.
Dewald Brevis said on AB de Villiers’ YouTube channel, “His room door is always open. If he’s sleeping, that’s the only time it’s closed. I found myself a few times in his room, just sitting there while he was busy, chatting, watching cricket, or talking about life. It’s very special.”
Dewald Brevis about MS Dhoni:
“The humbleness, the way he is as a person – it stood out to me, the time he has for the players, people & his door is always open. Only time it’s closed, when he is sleeping – just sitting there, talking about his hobbies, watching cricket, it’s… pic.twitter.com/LoVRwmr2hX

Dewald Brevis calls the Chepauk experience ‘Incredible’
Meanwhile, the South African youngster played just six games but lit up the IPL 2025 with his fearless batting. He scored 225 runs at an impressive average of 37.50 and a blistering strike rate of 180. Whether the CSK team needed quick runs to accelerate or stability to rebuild, he was the best answer.
Brevis further said that playing at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai was really special for him. The roar of the Chennai crowd after every big hit made him feel right at home, and in just a few matches, he became one of the most favorite players for the CSK fans.

He further added, “I couldn’t explain how I felt when I batted at Chepauk Stadium. It was incredible, my second entry especially. Obviously, I’m playing for Chennai, so it is a special place for me.”
CSK likely to retain Dewald Brevis for plans
Earlier, MS Dhoni hinted that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will retain Brevis as the team is set for the buildup for the future. He hailed the Proteas star as a complete package.
Dhoni had said during the IPL 2025: “It’s the momentum in the middle order (Brevis offers). He’s also a very good fielder, he has power, and he can hit good balls for boundaries. And he brings good energy. Happy with the way he’s playing. He can be an asset going ahead.”
Notably, Brevis had already played 2 Tests, 4 ODIs, and 10 T20Is for South Africa and amassed 84, 62, and 318 runs, respectively. He has already smashed a century in a T20I in Australia.
