Distance Ace Luka Mijatovic Commits to the University of Texas

U.S. National Team member Luka Mijatovic announced his commitment to Texas on Thursday, Oct. 30.

Mijatovic, who competed for the U.S. at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships, posted a photo on Instagram of himself in a cowboy hat. Although the photo was not captioned, several comments congratulated him on joining the Texas Longhorns.

The national high school record holder in the 500 freestyle and holder of several National Age Group Records, will join Bob Bowman’s Texas team.

But he still has two years of high school remaining at Foothill, California.

He had a breakout meet at the 2025 U.S. National Championships.

Mijatovic was seeded 19th in the 200 free entering the meet, and through the first 150 meters of his prelims swim, he seemed to be out of contention, only for a blazing last length to result in a fourth-place finish in the heat. His time of 1:45.92 took two seconds from his own best time and he became the fastest 18-and-under swimmer in American history. Prior to that swim, no 15-16 swimmer had ever been under 1:47, but Mijatovic jumped right over the 1:46s.

He finished fifth in the 400 IM and then broke the NAG record in the 400 free in 3:45.89 during prelims at nationals and ended up second. He also went a 7:53.80 in the 800 free to take fourth.
