Steve Aoki is a major UFC fan, so much so that he’s invited multiple fighters on stage at his concerts through the years, and also DJ’d the wedding of former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling.
The Grammy-nominated artist and producer moved his schedule around to attend this past Saturday’s UFC 324 event in Las Vegas and has a number of favorites on the roster. One name repeatedly came to Aoki’s mind when discussing his UFC fandom with MMA Junkie on the UFC 324 red carpet, especially when asked who he thinks has done the best cake throw into the crowd, which is a signature of his performances.

That man is UFC 325 headliner Diego Lopes (27-7 MMA, 6-2 UFC), who faces Alexander Volkanovski (27-4 MMA, 14-3 UFC) in a rematch for the featherweight title Saturday at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney (Paramount+).
“Diego, I would have to say, was very impressive,” Aoki told MMA Junkie. “We were in Mexico together, and I played in Puebla in his city where he trains. This was the second time we caked. We did it before when he was with me in Guadalajara. The crowd was at least 25 feet away. I did not think he was going to make it over there, because it’s difficult.
“There’s a real art to cake throwing. It’s not like you can pick up a cake, and you can actually nail someone in the face. It’s actually difficult. He actually launched it, and it got some head shots. I was impressed. There is evidence of him nailing some amazing head shots. So I think Diego is one of the best fighting IQs, for sure, for me when I watch him, and he definitely has the cake IQ, too.”
Lopes shared the video of the cake throw Aoki mentioned from November 2024. He still holds up the spot as No. 1 cake thrower more than a year later, and now he’ll try to add the distinction of No. 1 featherweight in the world to his resume, as well.
