Dominick Reyes’ ideal scenario leads to White House UFC title fight

by

Dominick Reyes hopes he can avenge one particular loss at the White House.

Reyes (15-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) meets Carlos Ulberg (12-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) in a key light heavyweight clash in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 260 (ESPN+) main event at RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.

The 35-year-old, who was once on a four-fight losing skid, has completely turned his career around and finds himself closing in on a title shot. The outcomes of the light heavyweight title-fight rematch between champion Magomed Ankalaev and Alex Pereira, as well as Jiri Prochazka vs. Khalil Rountree at UFC 320 on Oct. 4, will play a big factor in what’s next for Reyes after Saturday.

Reyes broke down his ideal scenario but admits these aren’t predictions, just more of what he hopes happens.

“I’m having my son in December, so best case Alex wins, he’s a good friend of mine, I want him to win, and then they rematch with Jiri and Jiri wins, and then I rematch Jiri at the White House,” Reyes told MMA Junkie. “USA baby, let’s go. I’m a big patriot. That would be a dream come true.”

Prochazka (31-5-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) knocked out Reyes with a spinning back elbow in their May 2021 main event. While Reyes is open to fighting anyone with a win over Ulberg, the Prochazka rematch would mean the most.

“The rematch with Jiri, that’s the fight,” Reyes said. “I don’t really want to fight Alex because he’s my friend. I’ll fight him, but I don’t really want to. Ankalaev, I’ll fight the guy, whatever. Same with Khalil; it’s like whatever. I have no history, or I want to get that back kind of deal.

“The Jiri fight was a great fight while it lasted. I think we do it again, it will be another amazing fight, and I’ve got nothing but respect for Jiri. … All I know is I’ve been laser-beam focused on this fight, and that’s all I’m really worried about to be honest with you.”
