DP World Tour: Noren wins after seven years

by

Sweden's Alex Noren returned to winning ways on the DP World Tour after seven years, winning the Betfred British Masters with a 272 (68, 72, 65, 67, -16) round. The tournament was held at The Belfry (par 72), a four-time Ryder Cup host course in Sutton Coldfield, England. Guido Migliozzi finished 41st with a 285 (70, 74, 72, 69, -3) and Andrea Pavan 64th with a 293 (74, 70, 74, 75, +5).

Noren, a 43-year-old from Stockholm, has eleven wins on the tour but prefers to play on the PGA Tour. He recovered in the final round with a 67 (-5, seven birdies, two bogeys), edging out Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard and New Zealand's Kazuma Kobori, who finished second with 273 (-15), by one stroke. The latter, in particular, attempted the impossible, but despite an eagle and four birdies in the final six holes, he was unable to advance Noren to a playoff, despite the latter making a bogey on the 18th.

Japanese Tommy Nakajima finished fourth with a 275 (-13), ahead of three Englishmen: Andy Sullivan, fifth with a 276 (-12), Marco Penge, and Matt Fitzpatrick, leader after three rounds but penalized by a 74 (+2), sixth with a 278 (-10).

Despite their low rankings, Migliozzi and Pavan managed to break their losing streaks of six and three consecutive cuts, respectively. Gregorio De Leo (71 74) and Francesco Laporta (71 74), 71st with a 145 (+1), were eliminated after 36 holes by one shot too many.

The winner received a check for €513,490 from a prize pool of approximately €2,985,000 (officially $3,500,000).

Ryder Cup: The six automatic qualifiers – It was the last tournament to automatically qualify for Team Europe for the next Ryder Cup (Bethpage State Park, Farmingdale, New York, USA, September 26-28), but in reality, only one player was missing, as five had already secured their spot: Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, and Tyrrell Hatton. The sixth player to leave for the USA is Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard, who narrowly edged out Ireland's Shane Lowry, who was sixth going into this tournament.
