Duke Breaks Losing Streak With Win At Virginia Tech

by

Duke broke a four-game losing streak and did it on the road at Virginia Tech, 70-54.

Duke survived an awful 24 turnovers largely through defense: the Hokies could not hit a shot, making just 5-16 threes and 17-64 overall, which translates to 31% and 27%. And they also coughed the ball up 17 times. Duke had more, but the Blue Devils hit more shots and outscored Virginia Tech from the line 20-15.

Duke also had a whopping 50-34 rebound advantage.

Toby Fournier had 19 points and 9 rebounds while Taina Mair added 17. Jordan Wood, who has spent a lot of time on the bench since the incident against West Virginia (if you’ve forgotten, she taunted a West Virginia player as the first half ended, both sides saw ejections and the Mountaineers played the second half with just five players and still won), played 19 minutes but hasn’t earned her starting spot back yet.

It was hardly a perfect win but it beats the heck out of losing. With the win, Duke moves to 1-0 in ACC play.

The Blue Devils now get a break for exams and won’t play again until they take on South Dakota State on December 18th.
