DWU women’s basketball drops exhibition at Drake

Oct. 28—DES MOINES, Iowa. — The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball team opened the new season with an exhibition contest against Division I Drake University at the Knapp Center.

The Tigers trailed by four points at halftime before the Bulldogs pulled away in the second half for a 77-57 win on Tuesday night.

No. 9-ranked DWU jumped out to an early 9-4 lead to begin the first quarter, but the Bulldogs answered with a 20-4 run in the span of six minutes to end the first quarter leading 24-13.

In the second quarter, the Tigers opened with an 8-2 run and cut into the 11-point deficit at the end of the first half due to junior forward Emma Yost leading the first-half scoring with 16 points — with 11 in the second quarter. Yost finished with a team-high 24 points in 30 minutes of play.

DWU had a 21-point second quarter to cut into the halftime deficit by four points, 38-34, and limited Drake to 14 points in the second quarter. The Tigers made four of their last five shots to close the first half of action.

Then, it was all Drake in the second half, outscoring Dakota Wesleyan 39-23 over the final 20 minutes.

Yost led all scorers for the Tigers and added three rebounds, while Avery Broughton tallied 11 points, five rebounds and four blocks. Jaida Young had six points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals, while Taliyah Hayes finished with five points. Shalayne Nagel added four points and seven rebounds.

DWU shot 41% from the floor (25-of-61), 20% from the 3-point line (4-of-20) and 37.5% at the free-throw line (3-of-8). Drake had 16 points off of DWU’s 15 turnovers and 17 fast-break points.

DWU opens the regular season against Bismarck State at 6 p.m. on Nov. 4 at the Corn Palace.
