CLEVELAND — Pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis L. Ortiz were indicted by prosecutors in Brooklyn, N.Y., on charges related to an alleged scheme to rig bets on pitches thrown in MLB games, according to a report on Sunday by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The Guardians released a statement following the news.
“We are aware of the recent law enforcement action,” the Guardians’ statement reads. “We will continue to fully cooperate with both law enforcement and Major League Baseball as their investigations continue.”
Major League Baseball also released a statement following Sunday’s news.
“MLB contacted federal law enforcement at the outset of its investigation and has fully cooperated throughout the process,” the league’s statement reads. “We are aware of the indictment and today’s arrest, and our investigation is ongoing.”
On July 3, MLB placed Ortiz on non-disciplinary paid leave through the All-Star break amid a league investigation involving sports gambling. On July 18, his leave was extended through Aug. 31.
Clase initially was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave on July 28, which was to run through Aug. 31. On Aug. 31, MLB announced Ortiz and Clase would each remain on leave “until further notice.”
