College football’s bowl season has steadily declined in recent years outside of the College Football Playoff and very few select games.
The sport continues to put a higher emphasis on the CFP as a potential expansion for the 12-team playoff is discussed. However, one of the most prominent names in college football wants to save bowl season as many fans used to know it.

ESPN college football insider Josh Pate debuts the perfect plan for college football to be restored to its original postseason greatness. Meanwhile, It even includes a way for the sport to end its season annually on New Year’s Day.
During the 2025=26 season, the national championship game didn’t occur until mid-January. Meanwhile, many non-CFP bowl games didn’t have nearly the same buzz as previously years, minus the Pop-Tarts Bowl.
Pate’s plan includes moving the regular season up one week so that Week 0 kicks off slightly earlier in August. That will allow for the Power 4 conference championship games to be held during Thanksgiving weekend.

Meanwhile, bowl season would then run throughout December and conclude with the CFP national title game on Jan. 1. The ESPN analyst even included a potential bracket reveal for the CFP on the Sunday after Thanksgiving to help hype up college football fans.
