We jump into the college basketball way-back machine as Notre Dame basketball wraps its two-game preseason exhibition schedule at home.
Along comes an old friend from back in the salad days of college basketball. Back when both programs were independent. Back when they met twice a season. Back when the stakes for each game were huge for two (often highly) ranked teams. Back when Digger Phelps was on the sideline for Notre Dame and Ray Meyer (a Notre Dame graduate) was on the sideline for DePaul.

Noie: It’s a new season in more ways than one for retooled Notre Dame women’s basketball program
Back before college basketball became a big business, and each went their separate ways. When DePaul was set to open its new home ― Wintrust Arena ― then-athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto knew of only one program to be the first opponent in 2017: Notre Dame.
It’s DePaul at Notre Dame again, like how it used to be.

Series history
In a series that dates to the first meeting in 1912 at the old Notre Dame Fieldhouse, Notre Dame leads 62-44 overall, including 38-13 in South Bend. The Irish also went 10-2 against the Blue Demons when the teams were Big East Conference colleagues.

Notre Dame has won 11 straight dating back to DePaul’s last win, 67-66, on February 8, 2007. This will be the first time the teams meet since a 95-70 Notre Dame victory on November 24, 2018.
Keep an eye on …
DePaul
Guard C.J. Gunn became the first Blue Demon this week to earn preseason All-Big East honors since 2020 when he was named a third team all-conference selection at league media day. A 6-foot-7, 200-pound senior from Indianapolis (Lawrence North), Gunn averaged a team-high 12.9 points and 4.0 rebounds last season. In league play, he averaged 13.7 points and 4.7 rebounds.
With Gunn back for his senior year, DePaul, picked to finish ninth in the 11-team league, is the only Big East team to return its leading scorer from last season. Gunn had 13 points, four rebounds and one assist in Sunday’s 92-90 exhibition victory over Loyola (Chicago).

Gunn played AAU for Spiece Heat under current Irish assistant coach Ryan Owens.
Notre Dame
Freshman forward Brady Koehler, who went for 11 points, four rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot in the exhibition opener at Butler. A native of Fishers, Indiana, the left-handed Koehler logged 19:57. Only all-conference guard Markus Burton played more minutes.
At 6-foot-10, Koehler is long and athletic and looks like he weighs more like 135 pounds (listed at 205). It’s that endless wingspan and obvious athleticism and ability to hold his own that will get Koehler on the floor. Freshman Jalen Haralson will play a lot for the Irish this season. So should Koehler, who also can do a myriad of tasks.
