Those special “The Bend” black and gold threads that scream Purdue more than they do Notre Dame basketball haven’t helped. The home whites and the road blues haven’t done much either. Bring back the mustard golds and all the karma that came with them.

Until then, Notre Dame will trot out green uniforms for Saturday’s home game against Florida State. Maybe that will help the Irish snap their current slide of three straight losses and eight of nine.

The Seminoles have won five straight and eight of nine, with the last Irish win in March 2021. The teams met once last season, a 67-60 Florida State win in Tallahassee Feb. 4, 2025. Markus Burton scored 25 points with one rebound and one assist in 36 minutes. The Irish trailed by as many as 10 points and led by as many as 10. They led for 9:39.

∎ Before showing something in the ACC, Notre Dame must show something at the gym formerly known as the ACC. The Irish enter this one 1-3 at Purcell Pavilion in conference play. They’ve lost four of five at home dating back to late December. Want Notre Dame to be good in this league? It must start with being good at home. Notre Dame is past due to do that.
∎ Idle since a Jan. 31 home win over Stanford, Florida State has found something under 35-year-old rookie head coach Luke Loucks. The Seminoles have won two straight league games and three of four. Prior to that run, Florida State had lost five straight and 10 of 12. Notre Dame may be catching Florida State at the wrong time.

∎ The bottom three teams will not take part in the ACC Tournament next month in Charlotte, so this becomes a must-win game for Notre Dame. It’s time for the Irish to get some separation from the league basement, where it currently resides. If the season ended today, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh would not qualify for the league tournament.

Florida State F Chauncey Wiggins
On a team that has seven transfers and five freshmen, Wiggins is the old guy in the locker room. He’s the most experienced player on the roster having played in 126 career games.
Last time out against Stanford, Wiggins had 23 points and three rebounds in 32 minutes.

In 21 games with 19 starts, the 6-foot-10, 225-pound senior from Atlanta is averaging 12.5 points (second on the team), 4.0 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 27.2 minutes. He’s shooting .437 percent from the field, .331 from 3 and .899 from the foul line. The free throw percentage would rank second in the league behind only Irish guard Cole Certa if Wiggins qualified (minimum 2.5 attempts per game).
The Clemson transfer, who appeared in the 2024 Elite Eight, averaged 8.3 points and 2.9 rebounds in a career-best 23.6 minutes per game last season for the Tigers.
Notre Dame PF Carson Towt
Winding down his seventh year of college, the Gilbert, Arizona native is all about the here and now. He doesn’t look back; he doesn’t look ahead. All that matters to Towt is today. What he can do to be a better basketball player today. What he can do to be a better teammate today. What he can do to help Notre Dame have success today.

That said, Towt knows the end of his collegiate career is coming. Maybe sooner than expected. Only eight games are guaranteed the rest of the way for Notre Dame, which means Towt may have only eight games left in his career. After that, it’s over.
Towt is averaging 6.5 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 25.8 minutes. He’s shooting .595 percent from the field. He ranks fourth in the league in rebounding average and would rank fourth in field goal percentage if he qualified (minimum five attempts per game).
