Everything you need to know for the Notre Dame basketball season opener vs LIU Brooklyn

by

This season opener may not be as easy as everyone around Notre Dame basketball might believe it will be. Believe it should be.

LIU Brooklyn can play. They’re old. They embrace defense and they’ve tasted success, as evident of finishing 17-16 overall and 12-4 (second place) in the Northeast Conference last season, their fourth under former college and NBA standout guard Rod Strickland. Yes, that Rod Strickland.

The Sharks (nee Blackbirds) are picked this preseason to finish tied for third in the nine-team league. Some believe they could chase an NCAA Tournament bid from the NEC. Generally, a power-conference team like Notre Dame schedules a non-power conference team like this one with the thought of an easy opener. If the Irish aren’t careful, this one might get tough.

Notre Dame opens with four of its first five at home. Time to build some confidence. Time to get a win.

LIU Brooklyn guard Malachi Davis

A 6-foot-4 graduate student/transfer from Arizona State, the 23-year-old Davis led the Sharks in scoring (17.7), steals (1.8) and free throw percentage (.802) last season, his first at LIU Brooklyn, to earn first team All-Northeast Conference honors.

One of nine transfers and one five players on the LIU roster from Canada, the Scarborough native is one of the big reasons why LIU was one of the top defensive teams in the league last season. The Sharks finished first in field goal percentage defense (.410 percent), steals (8.2), third in scoring defense (65.3) and fourth in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.309).

Notre Dame guard Sir Mohammed

The sophomore showed in two exhibitions why he was such a coveted (Top 50) recruit coming out of high school in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Mohammed scored 10 points with three rebounds in 17 minutes against Butler, then followed with a game-high 15 points with six rebounds and a blocked shot in 19 minutes against DePaul. He came off the bench in both games.

After playing last season out of position, Mohammed is back to a more comfortable/suitable role as a secondary handler, point guard who can distribute, get to the basket and make a shot. It’s shown in his game.
