Ex-champ’s claim could explain Patchy Mix’s poor performance

T.J. Dillashaw has revealed that Patchy Mix struggled during his training camp for UFC 320.

Mix (20-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) had a full camp for his bantamweight fight against Jakub Wiklacz (17-3-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in Saturday’s prelims at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, but it wasn’t a good one. He lost the bout by split decision, dropping his second consecutive fight to open his UFC tenure.

Mix, who has competed in five-round fights as a Bellator champion, was visibly tired throughout the contest. Dillashaw offered some insight into Mix’s training camp after speaking to him during fight week.

“I got a little bit of insight on this, as well, too,” Dillashaw said on the “JAXXON PODCAST.” “I got to be there on fight week, and he cuts a lot of weight, man. He gets big. He cuts a lot, a lot of weight. I think he might be breaking himself down a lot, too. After weigh-ins, you do the weigh-ins in the morning at 9, and then the ceremonial weigh-ins are at like 5, and he just did not look good when we were going to ceremonial weigh-ins. You should be feeling f*cking awesome. You just weighed in. He’s like laying on the ground, looking like he’s still cutting weight. Then I go to the bathroom, and he runs up to go to the bathroom, says he’s been throwing up since weigh-ins.

“He can’t keep anything down. He’s sick. It’s probably a little bit of nerves, too, but he couldn’t hold nothing down. Then he’s talking about how he had staph for the last two weeks, he’s been on antibiotics. So, it didn’t sound like camp went that great. When you’re on antibiotics, your cardio is going to suck, and we saw that in the fight. It was a close, close fight. People had it going either way, and he ran out of gas. He came out good, got the takedown, but unfortunately his gas tank isn’t there. When you’re on antibiotics, it really f*cks you up, so that could be a factor in it.”

Mix has looked flat in his two UFC appearances, and Dillashaw would like to see him make some changes in his game.

“On the technical side of things, I’d really like to see Patchy Mix evolve,” Dillashaw said. “I would need to start seeing him moving his head. He doesn’t have any head motion. He kind of stands in front of you a little bit and just plots forward. His jiu-jitsu is good. I could see some more feints, some more head motion, was a little more snappy on his punches, but unfortunately he was so tired that his punches didn’t have it. The first thing that goes away when you get tired is your feints and your movement.”
