Former India pacer Mohit Sharma recalled a rare instance when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni lost his cool during the Champions League T20 (CLT20). Mohit revealed that Dhoni abused him despite him taking a wicket in a match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), after he misunderstood a signal.
Dhoni is known for his calm demeanor and the title of ‘Captain Cool.’ He guided India to three ICC trophies and the Super Kings to multiple IPL titles. However, Dhoni also had a fiery side. Teammates who shared the dressing room with him recall rare moments when his intense focus made him lose his temper.
MS Dhoni Was Still Hurling Abuses – Mohit Sharma
Mohit Sharma stated that there was a miscommunication with MS Dhoni during the match against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Dhoni had asked Ishwar Pandey to bowl, but Mohit mistakenly assumed the call was for him. The umpire instructed him to complete the over.

Mohit dismissed Yusuf Pathan with his first delivery, but Dhoni, visibly upset by the mix-up, continued to scold him even during the celebrations.
“I had a lot of moments. Mahi bhai has a cool and calm aura. You don’t expect him to lose his cool. Being a young guy, you get excited when he loses his cool at you. There was a moment in the CLT20 against KKR, Mahi bhai called Ishwar Pandey to bowl, but I thought he called me,” Mohit told CricTracker.
“I started my run-up, but Mahi bhai said he didn’t call me to bowl, and he tried calling Ishwar. The umpire said I have to continue bowling as I had started my run-up. He lost his cool at me and abused me. I took Yusuf [Pathan] bhai’s wicket on the first ball. During the celebration, Mahi bhai was still hurling abuses (laughs),” he added.
I Had a Lot of Off-Field Moments With MS Dhoni – Mohit Sharma
Mohit Sharma also stated that MS Dhoni has had an impact on him. He stated that the former Indian captain shared lessons on life, character, and kindness more than cricketing guidance.
“At the same time, I had a lot of off-field moments [with him]. He is someone who loves to teach things. Every time you sit with him, you learn something in life, not just about the sport. He teaches how cricket can make a kind human,” he added.
Mohit Sharma’s Journey With Chennai Super Kings Under MS Dhoni
Mohit Sharma joined the Chennai Super Kings in 2013. MS Dhoni backed him as a frontline pacer. He took 20 wickets in his debut IPL season. The pacer won the Purple Cap in 2014 with 23 wickets.
Sharma picked up 57 wickets from 2013 to 2015. After leaving CSK, Mohit represented Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat Titans before returning to the Super Kings in 2019. He could not recreate his early dominance in his second stint and added 12 scalps to his tally.
Mohit bagged 69 wickets across four seasons in yellow, making him one of the franchise’s top wicket-takers. His performance under Dhoni not only shaped his T20 career but also paved the way for his India call-up in 2013.
