July 10: What you need to know for Thursday
Todd Zola: Thursday’s ledger gets going early with a 12:05 p.m. ET scheduled start for the first game of a doubleheader between the Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets at Camden Yards. The clubs will make up Wednesday’s rainout at 5:10 p.m. ET.
-
Minnesota Twins All-Star Byron Buxton was hit in the hand in the first inning Wednesday night by a pitch from Chicago Cubs starter Cade Horton. Buxton stayed in the game but was lifted for a pinch hitter in the second inning and is considered day-to-day after being diagnosed with a contusion. The Twins will go for a sweep of the Cubs in a Thursday afternoon affair starting at 1:10 p.m. ET. With the quick turnaround, it wouldn’t be surprising for Buxton to sit this one out. Brooks Lee replaced Buxton in the lineup and played second base, with Willi Castro shifting to center field.
-
The New York Yankees plan to use Jazz Chisholm Jr. as their starting second baseman for the rest of the season. At least for now, Oswald Peraza will be the primary third baseman, though Jorbit Vivas was recalled to the Bronx. Vivas is replacing DJ LeMahieu, who somewhat surprisingly was designated for assignment Wednesday.
-
Masataka Yoshida made his 2025 debut for the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night, batting sixth and going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in a 10-2 win as the club completed a sweep of the Colorado Rockies. It’s unclear how Alex Cora plans on dividing playing time between Yoshida, who was the DH on Wednesday, and outfielders Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela and Roman Anthony. Complicating matters is the impending return of Alex Bregman, who is ticketed to return during the club’s four-game home set with the Tampa Bay Rays.
-
After missing Tuesday with a sore back, Ronald Acuna Jr. was back in the Atlanta Braves lineup Wednesday night, hitting in his customary leadoff spot. The slugger opened the game with a home run, his first of two on the night in a 9-2 victory over the Athletics. The clubs play the rubber game of the series Thursday night in Sacramento.
July 9: What you need to know for Wednesday
Zola: A pair of 2:10 p.m. ET afternoon affairs kicks off today’s slate, followed by two more matinees. There are 11 evening contests.
-
One of the early games marks the return of Tyler Glasnow for his first MLB appearance since April 27. The righty has been sidelined due to shoulder inflammation. He and the Los Angeles Dodgers will try to avoid being swept by the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.
-
Ronald Acuna Jr. was a late scratch last night due to lower back tightness. His status for tonight’s road date with the Athletics is unclear. The Braves dropped the first game of the series 10-1.
-
The Athletics were also down a key player in the win after SS Jacob Wilson was hit in the left arm by a pitch in the first inning. X-rays came back negative and the All-Star was diagnosed with a bruised hand. He is considered to be day-to-day.
-
Ha-Seong Kim returned to the Tampa Bay Rays lineup last night, but 2B Brandon Lowe remained shelved as a result of lingering left side soreness. Call him day-to-day as well, with Jose Caballero likely to cover the keystone again today if Lowe can’t play in today’s late-afternoon tilt with the Detroit Tigers.
-
Washington Nationals C Keibert Ruiz was put back on the 7-day concussion IL Tuesday. Last month, he was hit on the head by a foul ball while in the dugout. Ruiz missed eight games before returning on July 4. However, he experienced symptoms again Tuesday, so he’s slated to be out through the All-Star break. Riley Adams will again serve as the team’s primary backstop.
-
Nolan Arenado missed his third consecutive game due to a right shoulder impingement. Nolan Gorman handled the hot corner last night in the St. Louis Cardinals‘ 4-2 win over the Nationals. Arenado joins the many other players we’re talking about today as day-to-day.
-
The New York Mets placed Starling Marte on the 10-day IL Tuesday. He had been playing through a right knee bruise, but after aggravating it on Sunday, the club decided to shut him down through the All-Star break. Since June 1, Marte is batting .324/.372/.423, but he has appeared in just 21 games while managing the injury.
-
Ketel Marte returned to the Arizona Diamondbacks lineup Tuesday night after missing Monday due to right groin tightness. Marte went 0-for-2 but walked twice in a 1-0 loss to the San Diego Padres.
