Fever Star Slams Cathy Engelbert for Downplaying Caitlin Clark’s Impact

by

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham weighed in on comments made by WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert about her teammate Caitlin Clark recently.

Earlier this week, Napheesa Collier revealed a previous conversation with Engelbert that included Clark. According to the Minnesota Lynx player, Engelbert allegedly stated that Clark should be grateful to the WNBA for a living and believes that the league made her popular.

Apparently, that didn’t sit well with her Indiana teammate Cunningham. As such, the point guard made sure to make her displeasure about those comments known during Friday’s episode of her “Show Me Something” podcast.

Cunningham criticized Engelbert over Caitlin Clark comments

While discussing Cathy Engelbert’s alleged comments with co-host West Wilson, Cunningham gave a scathing criticism of the commissioner for her “disrespect” towards Clark.

“Great leaders want to see other people be more successful than them,” Cunningham said (Timestamp: 15:43). “They wanna make sure they’re cared for… You can be respectful and treat your product, the product of why people are paying attention, why people are buying certain jersey. Treat your product with respect like a great leader.”

According to her, the WNBA commissioner has failed to do this and instead done the opposite.

“She’s not, in any sense. And it’s just the disrespect is just crazy to me,” Cunningham added.

Cunningham suggests Engelbert should ask for help

During the same episode of the podcast, both Sophie Cunningham and her co-host suggested Cathy Engelbert should get some help in running the league.

“It’s fine to admit when you need help, right?” Cunningham said (Timestamp: 19:53). “It’s okay to understand when you’re not cut out for something.”

The Fever player further said that those who can do the job better should be introduced at this point.

“Well then, bring people in who are. My thing is you got to keep growing. You always need to keep growing. And with that, the league needs to keep growing,” she added.

Sophie Cunningham’s comments appear to mirror Collier’s recent remarks about the WNBA leadership under Cathy Engelbert. With other players backing the Lynx star after her fierce statements this week, it’ll be interesting to see what the league does about the current issues raised.
