Fever Star Sophie Cunningham Has Two Words on Big Moment With Missouri

by

To say that Sophie Cunningham’s first season with the Indiana Fever has been a success would be an understatement. After joining the squad via a multi-team trade deal during the offseason, the former Phoenix Mercury guard has had a tremendous impact on the Fever both on and off the court.

Cunningham’s debut campaign in Indiana, however, was cut short by an unfortunate knee injury that required season-ending surgery. Nevertheless, this unwanted turn of events has done little to overshadow the fact that the 29-year-old has become a bona fide star for the Fever faithful.

On Wednesday, Cunningham took to social media to share her reaction to her alma mater’s post about her. The former Missouri star is being inducted into the program’s Hall of Fame this year, and Cunningham wanted to ensure that the news gets out.

“Go Tigers!” she wrote, sharing Mizzou Athletics’ post.

As the post indicates, the induction ceremony will be held on Sept. 12 at Mizzou Athletics in Columbia, MO. It also links to a site that allows fans to purchase tickets for the event.

It is worth noting that Missouri made the announcement in April, before the WNBA season began. She was already headed to the Hall of Fame even before playing a single minute for the Fever.

Cunningham earned this honor after a historic four-year career with the Tigers. The AP All-American guard averaged 17.0 points on 50.1% shooting, 5.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.4 triples in 129 games played for Missouri. Cunningham led the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament for four consecutive years, earning All-SEC honors in each of those seasons.

Cunningham is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 2,187 points to her name, and starting Sept. 12, no other player will be able to wear the No. 3 jersey for Missouri.
