Guard Sophie Cunningham is the latest season-ending casualty that the Indiana Fever has endured this season.
The Indiana Fever’s most recurring foe has struck once again.
Indiana announced another addition to its season-long medical casualty list, as the team announced that Sophie Cunningham would miss the rest of the year with a knee ailment in Sunday’s win over the Connecticut Sun.
Cunningham, working through her first year in Indianapolis, was injured after a physical encounter with Bria Hartley during second-quarter action. She underwent an MRI on Monday, leading to her season-ending diagnosis. In a grim irony, the injury occurred on Cunningham’s 29th birthday.
Caitlin Clark, Fever Suffer Injury Surge
Cunningham, who has become an Indiana fan favorite for her defensive work and spark off the bench, ends her Fever debut with averages of 8.6 points (on a career-best 46.9 percent from the field) and 3.5 rebounds on 30 appearances this year.
The former Phoenix Mercury rep and and newly-minted podcast star is the third Indianapolis talent to land on the season-ending injury report this season, joining Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald. The Fever, of course, also continues to deal with the departure of Caitlin Clark, the face of the W who is out indefinitely with a groin issue.
Indiana Fever Sign Guard Shedy Peddy
With Cunningham sidelined, the Fever signed veteran guard Shey Peddy to a hardship contract and released Kyra Lamber. Peddy, 36, played six games for the Los Angeles Sparks earlier this season after she missed the entire 2024 campaign.
With so many sidelined, time will how Indiana (19-16) handles the rest of the 2025 season: entering Tuesday night play, the Fever holds the sixth spot on the WNBA playoff bracket. That’s just two games behind Phoenix for the fourth seed and the first-round homecourt advantage that comes with it. But it’s also only 2.5 games ahead of Los Angeles and Washington, the first teams out.
A dangerous weekend awaits the ailing Fever, as it faces a home-and-home against the league-leading Minnesota Lynx that tips off on Friday in Indianapolis (7:30 p.m. ET, Ion). It’ll be the first time the two sides square off since the Clark-less Fever prevailed in the Commissioner’s Cup Final back on July 1.
