Filip Nowacki Among 14-Strong Great Britain Squad Heading To World Juniors; Mills & Morgan Also Selected
Filip Nowacki – who won four titles at the European Junior Championships in early July – is among a 14-strong Great Britain squad heading to the World Junior Championships next month in Otopeni, Romania.
Nowacki set a European junior record of 2:08.32 in the 200m breaststroke as he went fifth in the all-time British rankings, within a second of Ross Murdoch’s 2:07.30 national record. Having lowered Adam Peaty’s British 100 junior mark in prelims, the 17-year-old went on to post 59.59 en-route to gold. Nowacki also played his part in golds in the men’s and mixed medley relays.
Nowacki, who hails from Jersey, went on to win eight titles at the Island Games in Orkney.
Now he sets sail for Otopeni where he’ll meet Japan’s Shin Ohashi who set a world junior record of 2:07.27 at the High School Championships in Osaka in June. Ohashi didn’t qualify for the World Championships that start next Sunday in Singapore so will head to Romania for the meet which runs from 19-24 August.
Max Morgan and Jacob Mills – who are both set to make a senior world championships debuts – will also join up with the team following their time in Singapore as part of their own continued development of competition experiences on the international stage.
Nowacki is one of five European junior champions to be selected alongside Amelie Blocksidge, Dean Fearn, Blythe Kinsman and Amalie Smith.
Jacob Mills and Max Morgan – who are both set to make a senior world championships debuts – will also join up with the team following their time in Singapore as part of their own continued development of competition experiences on the international stage.
Mills broke the 22-sec barrier in the 50 free twice in one day at the British Championships in April, posting 21.96 to head prelims before finishing second behind Olympic silver medallist Ben Proud in 21.99. Morgan won the 50m breaststroke in 27.69 at trials which followed his 100 silver in 1:00.10 to book a trip to Singapore.
The 14-strong team will be Britain’s first to attend a World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships since the 2019 edition in Budapest, where the team returned with four medals – one silver and three bronze.
