Five Classic Pumas Tries against Ireland

by

There have been many great tries scored over the course of the long history of international competition between Los Pumas and Ireland. International competition dates back to 1952, that being a quarter of a century before the inaugural Rugby World Cup.

The Rugby World Cup era is where the bulk of matches between Los Pumas and Ireland have been played. Five classic tries against Ireland. At World Cups themselves, the teams crossed paths at RWCs 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015. The overall record is three wins for Argentina and one for Ireland.

The first of five classic tries presented in the video below was that by Diego Albanese for Argentina against Ireland in Lens, France during Rugby World Cup 1999. Albanese scored the only try of the match to see Los Pumas eliminate Ireland and reach the Quarter Finals for the first-time.

The second try is the only home score of the five on the list. It was scored by fullback Ignacio Corleto in Buenos Aires in 2000. Like Albanese’s score, it started from a scrum. However , that is where the similarities start and end. Albanese finished off a team move in the left corner while Agustín Pichot made a break and kicked through for Corleto to chase and score.

Corleto and Pichot were on the field again for the third try. It was a Rugby World Cup match and was again played in France but this time in Paris. El Mago, Juan Martín Hernández put up a high kick and regathered it himself. Carries from Martín Scelzo, Felipe Contepomi, Ignacio Fernández Lobbe and Patricio Albacete followed. Pichot then passed left with quick ball ending with Gonzalo Longo putting Horacio Agulla over in the left corner.

Tries four and five on the list were both scored in Cardiff, Wales. Argentina took-on Ireland at the home of Welsh Rugby at the Quarter Finals stage of Rugby World Cup 2015. Center Matías Moroni scored in the right corner following an assist from Santiago Cordero. Juan Imhoff scored twice in the match with his second sealing victory. The winger combined with flanker Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe who broke the line 10 meters inside Argentina’s own half. Imhoff had too much pace for the two Irish defenders.
